Value Delivered
Heritage Mechanical Services completed a major upgrade to New York City's largest wastewater treatment facility, while keeping critical treatment services operating. The upgrade included environmental improvements for local waterways and replacement of outmoded equipment, which will help the facility continue to comply with federal mandates.
Client Objectives
The plant is in constant need of upgrades to increase its capacity in reaction to a growing population. This upgrade is part of a larger process of upgrades over a 10-year period that allow the plant to remain operational while work is ongoing.
Solutions
During the project, we refurbished four sedimentation tanks and provided extensive industrial piping services, including the installation of approximately 850 feet of stainless-steel aeration, flocculation, and channel air piping.
Due to the plant's tight layout, we used special lifts and rigging equipment to raise pipes ranging in diameter from 66 to 96 inches into the air above 40-foot-high operational tanks. Our team then assembled the piping in the air and lowered it carefully into position within the facility— a process that required extensive preliminary planning, as well as advanced rigging expertise.
Client Background
The Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is the largest of New York's 14 wastewater treatment plants. It serves approximately one-million residents in a drainage area of more than 25 square miles fed by 180 miles of sewer lines.
